Research
Research Interests
Most of my research is in mathematics. Typically I am interested in things that involve at least two of the following broad areas: combinatorics, algebra, topology. Here are some specific topics that I like to work on:
Rigidity theory. For example the geometric and combinatorial rigidity theory of bar and joint frameworks. Here is a relevant Wikipedia entry: Structural Rigidity.
Topological graph theory. I have recently been interested in characterisations of graphs embedded in surfaces that satisfy certain sparsity conditions.
Commutative Algebra. In the past I have worked on multilinear algebra over local rings and currently I am getting more interested in combinatorial commutative algebra.
If you want more detail on what I am currently working on, have a look at some of my recent publications.
Contact me if you are interested in working together.
Currently hiring PhD researchers - please see https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/314933 for details of PhD positions that are currently being advertised. I will be cosupervising 2 of these PhDs along with Graham Ellis. The research will involve topology, number theory and computational algebra. The deadline is May 30, 2025 but applications will be processed as they are received so the sooner you apply the better.
Supervising students and postdocs
I have supervised 4 PhD students and 1 research Masters and I would like to have more research students. If you are interested in pursuing an MSc or PhD in one of the topics above (or something closely related) then I would be happy to hear from you. Send me a CV and a brief email about why you want to work with me.
If you already have, or have nearly, completed a PhD in a relavant area of mathematics and are interested in pursuing a postdoc with me then contact me and we can work on a funding application.
